Traditional Mexican folk art is a colorful and creative reflection of Mexican culture through handcrafts or artesanías.

Unlinke fine art which is focuses on the formal, aesthetic value, folk art centers around cultural significance.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ART

Mexican Folk Art is HIGHLY  characterized by bright, intense colors, lively patterns, and simplistic shapes!

WHAT ARE ALEBRIJES?

HOW TO MAKE:

STEP 1: Armature

STEP 2: Papier Mache

Using armature wire, form the "skeleton" of your alebrije, twisting each section over several times to ensure stability. With tape and newspaper or aluminum foil, wrap the armature to start building the "muscles" of your alebrijes.

Using a mixture of paste and water, drip strips of paper over and around the alebrijes to create the final layer or the "skin" of your alebrijes.
