FIRE TILES (Coaster Art)

Lessons:
In this unit, we'll mix science with art as we create one-of-a-kind, non-objective artwork using ceramic tiles, alcohol inks, and fire! Similar visually to paint pours or tie-dye, these pieces utilize an understanding of color theory to create colorful, whimsical designs.
The process is carried out by dropping colorful alcohol inks and rubbing alcohol onto a ceramic tile, then using a lighter to oxidize the alcohol, fusing it to the ceramic.

Tips, Tricks, & Process

-
Start by dropping or drizzling your alcohol ink onto the ceramic tile. You can use different colors or create a pattern as you wish. There’s no need for precision here — the beauty of abstract art lies in the randomness and fluidity of the process.
-
Use a dropper or pipette to control the amount of ink and where it lands, or you can simply let the ink fall in large or small amounts.
-
Next, use a small dropper to add a few drops of rubbing alcohol over the ink. The rubbing alcohol causes the ink to spread and blend, creating soft transitions and marbled effects.
-
Now, take a lighter and gently pass the flame over the alcohol ink. Hold the lighter a few inches above the tile — you don’t want to burn the ink, just heat it up to encourage movement.
-
The flame will cause the ink to move, bubble, or create small cells. You can also use the flame to intensify certain areas of the design or push the ink into specific shapes and directions.

After these steps, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind abstract piece of art on your ceramic tile! You can use it as a coaster or simply display it as a decorative piece.
